The Dodge Charger adds a pair of trim levels for 2012: the midlevel SXT and the high-performance SRT8. An eight-speed automatic is also now available with the standard V6.
Introduction. It’s rare to find a car that looks mean, sounds meaner and accelerates with the exuberance of a muscle car, yet can still comfortably schlep kids to school or pick up grandparents from the airport. Plenty of expensive European luxury sport sedans satisfy most of the criteria, save for the “look mean” bit. The 2012 Dodge Charger, meanwhile, satisfies all of the above.
The Charger’s breadth of personalities is pretty unique for its class. While its sloping roof line cuts into some rear headroom, the Charger otherwise offers the comfort you’d expect from a large sedan, with plenty of rear seat legroom and a reasonably big trunk. Its interior design is also a cut above most other family sedans.
Performance, however, is where the Charger really distinguishes itself. Three different engines are available, along with several degrees of handling and performance upgrades. The hard-core 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 returns to the lineup with a new 470-horsepower 6.4-liter V8 and other pumped-up enhancements to its handling and braking. Getting a V8-powered Charger is no longer a must, though; the 3.6-liter V6 offers plenty of power and good fuel economy, especially with the new eight-speed automatic.
The 2012 Charger isn’t for everybody. Its in-your-face attitude will no doubt turn off many large sedan buyers wanting something more stately. For them, the Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus or Hyundai Genesis will probably work out better. But if you want something a bit more aggressive than the norm, that can comfortably haul the family around and not break the bank, you won’t do better than the Charger.

If we were to make a list of unforgettable cars of the previous decade, the first-generation Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 would be on it. They were nutso full-sizers with 425-hp, 6.1-liter Hemis; aggressive looks; and chest-thumping exhausts. Those qualities earned them a pass for their shortcomings—which included occasionally crashy suspensions, plasticky interiors, turret-like outward vision, and a five-speed automatic transmission that could have used an additional ratio (or three).
We wouldn’t find ourselves smitten with the all-new 2012 300 SRT8 and Charger SRT8—each packing a larger, revised 6.4-liter Hemi with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque—if they were to arrive with similar faults. Our first chance to be smote came on the twisty roads north of Los Angeles and on the quick, 2.5-mile road course at Willow Springs International Raceway near Lancaster, California.

It was at the track that we received our first opportunity to let a preproduction 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 off its leash. Barreling down the front straight, the acceleration was stupefying for a full-size sedan, but is it quicker than before? We won’t know for sure until we strap on the test gear, but we predict a 4.6-second sprint to 60. That’s 0.1 second quicker, with the 6.4’s additional 45 horses and 50 lb-ft likely able to overcome a 150-ish-pound weight gain. Figure on a quarter-mile time of about 13 flat, an improvement of 0.2 second. (The Dodge should return identical numbers.)

Inspired by the original Dodge Chargers of the 1960s, the redesigned Dodge Charger builds on the 2006-2010 model it replaces and gains a number of new style and powertrain features. The all-new Charger is immediately recognizable but boasts many enhancements inside, outside and underneath its more aggressive skin.
From the front, the crosshair grille returns, although the headlamps are more canted than before and the fascia tilts at a slightly more aggressive angle. The Charger’s side profile is sleeker and more coupe-esque than the outgoing model and revised wheel designs look more upscale than before.
Perhaps the biggest changes have been applied to the Charger’s tail, where a full-width tail lamp arrangement visually links the Charger with both past Dodge models and the company’s Dodge Challenger sibling.
Dodge calls the tail lamps a “racetrack” graphic when their 164 LEDs are illuminated. Below the tail lamps, new squared-off tailpipes exit a more finished-looking faux diffuser.
The interior – a point of contention for many Chrysler products in recent years – now features upgraded materials and more cosmetically appealing designs, as well as Garmin navigation with Sirius Travel Link and the meaty corporate-wide three-spoke steering wheel that has arrived on nearly every new Chrysler product for the latest model year.
Several upscale options have been added to the Charger for the latest model, including adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path protection and a rear backup camera with grid lines.

The 2012 Dodge Charger was originally slated to debut in 2011, but looks more likely to arrive sometime in the 2102 calendar year. There have been no car show appearances and the only thing auto enthusiasts have to go on are semi-veiled spy photos and the 1999 Charger Concept car. Debuting in 2006 the current incarnation of this classic American car is only four years old so radical design changes are unlikely. The most glaring change is likely to be in the bodywork. An early release photo reveals a sloping curve that rises from the front to the rear fenders. This design cue is reminiscent of the original Charger and borrows from the 1999 Charger Concept car. Cosmetic upgrades in the front and tail are also expected.

Únder the hood, the new 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 delivers 45 more horsepower and 50 more lb.-ft. of torque than the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 it replaces – up 11 percent to 470 horsepower (351 kW) and up 12 percent to 470 (637 Nm) lb.-ft. of torque.
Even wîth the elevated power numbers, an estimated 25-percent fuel economy increase on the highway is achieved by use of a new-for-2012 active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wider rpm range for improved efficiency or the use of all eight cylinders when the extra power is needed. The new active valve exhaust system also allows for straight-through mid and rear mufflers for a throaty exhaust note under engine load.
The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 features an active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft wîth cam phasing to provide maximum low-end torque, including an additional 80 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,900 rpm for strong standing starts while optimizing high-end power.
The proven five-speed automatic transmission features new, standard §teering wheel mounted paddle shifters that join the center console mounted Auto Stick, allowing for a choice of spirited shifting on both the road and the race track. Both methods give the driver the ability to manually select specific gears on the transmission.

The new product onslaught continues for the Dodge brand with the announcement today at the Chicago Auto Show that the Dodge Charger SRT8 will return for the 2012 model year.

“We’re continuing the fast-paced rebuilding of Dodge as our performance brand, and the expansion of our SRT product lineup in 2012 is an important part of our rejuvenation,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand – Chrysler Group LLCs. “The new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 builds on the iconic four-door fastback coupe design of the all-new Charger and adds a much larger power band across the rpm range, along with intelligent performance attributes and safety and creature comforts for customers who are passionate about performance driving.”
The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 will be built at the Brampton Assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada and will be in dealer showrooms later this year.
“AWE-INSPIRING” POWERTRAIN
Under the hood, the new 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 delivers more horsepower and torque than the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 it replaces. It also will offer improved fuel economy.
Estimated power ratings for the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 are 465 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, including an estimated additional 80 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,900 rpm. Specific horsepower, torque and fuel economy numbers will be announced closer to the vehicle introduction.
Building upon the standard Fuel Saver technology (four-cylinder mode) found in the new 6.4 HEMI V-8, a new for 2012 adaptive valve exhaust system allows the technology to engage over a wider rpm range, which delivers improved fuel efficiency or the use of all eight cylinders when the power is needed.
An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing provides maximum low-end torque for impressive standing starts while optimizing high-end power.
For the first time in any Chrysler Group LLC SRT product, standard paddle-shift technology joins the standard AutoStick on the floor shifter. Both are mated to the proven W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission, allowing a choice of spirited shifting on the road and the racetrack.

The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 debuted at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, signaling a renewal of Dodge as a high-performance brand. The Charger SRT8 went on hiatus for the 2011 model year, after Chrysler sold just 688 Charger SRT8s in 2010.
The 2012 Charger SRT8 gets some major revisions versus the 2010 model, most notably under the hood. The 2012 model gets a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that churns out an estimated 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Dodge said specific horsepower, torque and fuel economy numbers will be announced closer to introduction in the fall. Pricing has not been announced.
The Charger SRT8 will also get standard paddle shifters and a five-speed automatic transmission. It has an estimated top speed of 175 mph and an estimated 0-60-mph time in the “high 4-second range,” said Dodge.
New for 2012 is an adaptive damping suspension, split five-spoke 20-inch lightweight forged and polished aluminum wheels with black-painted pockets and a new rear spoiler.
The cabin gets a new leather-wrapped SRT-exclusive steering wheel with a flattened bottom and a new 19-speaker premium audio system from Harman Kardon.
